Ipoh - from Sze

I promise to pass the digicam to Justin next so you can see the sinfully good stuff they have over at Kuching - but here are the very little pictures that I managed to capture over CNY - not that I could eat much, with the horrid weather affecting my appetite so much...

Day one breakfast:

Glutinious rice with kaya - one of my fave breakfast stuff

'Dry' curry hor fun with shredded chicken and char siew:)

My must-have CNY snack - is it just me or is it not available out of CNY?

Upon tasting, these dates seem different - what a let down!

And what CNY would be complete with out 'loh hon zai' - literally, Loh Hon vegetarian food - courtesy of my maternal grandma- ?

And Yu Sang? Accompanied by flying chopsticks, loud gibberish (I honestly do not know what we were shouting about haha) and remnants of Yu Sang on the table, thanks to our violence?

"Hoi nin fan" - 'open year rice' haha - the sumptous traditional lunch on the 2nd day of CNY at a relative's house.

Kumaran

Had breakfast here on Saturday with the family....

Good ol' teh tarik kurang manis - you can see the kid brother intently on his Gameboy SP behind

'banana leaf' - this waxed paper which does not resemble the real thing in any way has also failed to replace the actual banana leaf - I want the real thing!!

My usual mamak fare of roti telur bawang (egg and onions)

The 4-compartment tray used to serve the various types of curry sauces, my favourite being dhal.

Sua-ku me tried poori for the first time - my mom's breakfast, actually. It tastes somewhat like the regular roti canai, just somehow....crunchier?

The coming week will be hectic but the KL/Kuching trip is coming up - yay!

Taichi - Kuishin-bo @ Suntec

"We've been to Kuishin-bo at least 4 times during the past 2-3 months itself!" we realised as we were tucking into our food last Friday, as we visited the Japanese gourmet bazaar once again. Bearing in mind that we weren't TOO hungry then, the photos are quite limited-la.

Kuishin-bo is a place for a Japanese buffet lunch spread at relatively affordable prices. On weekdays, it is SGD22.90 for adults and about half price for kids. An amusing thing that we observed was that children had to be 1.4m or below to qualify. Weekends is 36 buckeroos for the buffet lunch. They serve dinner buffets as well - weekend dinner buffets are SGD36 for adults and half price for kids.

Another interesting thing is that they have this plan called 'Express Buffet'. If you finish your meal within an hour, the lunch buffet is only SGD19.80. Very worth it, if you ask me.

A picture of its seating arrangement from our corner table...

This is a picture (albeit a blur one) of the sushi 'bar'. On the left is where the lovely sashimi is laid out and the 'shi fu' for handroll is situated.

The teppanyaki chef at work. When you want teppanyaki, you can just pick the raw and very fresh veggies, salmon, beef, chicken or pork onto a plate, use the clip labelled with your table number on the plate and wait for the teppanyaki to be served to you! We didn't have teppanyaki that day as we weren't too hungry.

We started off with some sushi...

salmon and tuna sashimi, pickled cucumber salad and baby octopus salad

followed by one of my favourites - soft shell crabs

egg handroll, and behind it you can vaguely see some raw beef

Clockwise from left, we have scallop cheese gratin, salmon, unagi and stir-fried broccoli

One of the specialties - paper steamboat - kaminabe - when you have selected the one that you want, the waiter/waitress will then light up this burner thingy (which resembles our Bunsen burners back in school labs) and voila - your paper steamboat is starting to be on the boil!

Half eaten fruit cocktail salad

Fish chowder which didn't taste as good as the rest of the food

Vegetable tempura with Japanese curry

Dessert galore!

For dessert, we had an assortment of tarts

And Sze-lyn never leaves Kuishin-bo without its green tea and vanilla ice cream...

There were actually a lot more cooked food, such as pan fried salmon, miso soup, various types of chicken dishes, beef dishes, fried noodles, rice, deep fried stuff, salads, etc.

Needless to say, this remains one of our favourite restaurants in Singapore :)
